Our school library is accessible to all students and staff, with welcoming spaces led by a certified school librarian who provides relevant instruction, leadership, and resources to develop students' skills in critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

Library Support
Our library values access, inquiry, literacy, collaboration, privacy, and equity. We support staff and students by connecting them with high-quality resources and instruction to enhance their learning.
We provide the following services to support learning:
- Instruction - Students learn how to responsibly use and evaluate resources, information, and technology tools.
- Access to resources - Students check out library books or access digital resources that meet their academic needs or help them explore their interests.
- Reader’s Advisory - Get suggestions for which book to read next, or which resources to use for a project.

The Mount Vernon Library...
- believes that all students should find books on school shelves that reflect themselves, their lived experiences, and their interests.
- prioritizes diverse resources that reflect our students and the world. For literature, #ownvoices novels are sought—where the author is a member of the community centered in the novel.
- understands that access to diverse literature benefits all students. This includes diversity of race and ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ identity, country of origin, immigration status, religion, and disability.
- does not limit students’ independent reading choices by focusing on Lexile scores or reading levels, instead letting student interest and choice inform book selections [alignment with the official position of the American Association of School Librarians].
- does not privilege one kind of material format over another. Essentially, reading is reading and includes different formats such as graphic novels, audio books, magazine articles, and digital resources.
- recognizes the unique visual literacy gains that can be made when reading graphic novels.
- realizes that giving time and space for our students’ reading for pleasure is a crucial component of lifelong literacy and helps to drive academic achievement across all subjects.
