CRITERIA FOR REFERRAL/ADMISSIONS

If a student has not been through SST, referrals must be accompanied by a description and documentation of at least two research based interventions. The interventions should be developed by classroom and student services staff in the area(s) that the student is experiencing difficulty. Documentation may include narrative reports or graphs of student progress. An intervention documentation form is included on our website. Please complete this form and include it in the applicaton packet. All students who may be suspected of an educational disability must complete the referral process, as well as eligibility determination and IEP development, if appropriate, prior to a Mt. Vernon referral. Once a referral packet is submited, Mt. Vernon will schedule an intake session with the base school to discuss and review the referral and identify goals and objectives upon acceptance. If accepted, students are scheduled for an orientation/admission session within one to two weeks. The student's parent is required to attend the orientation/admission session. Our current acceptance rate is approximately 90 percent.

SERVICES AVAILABLE

Our school emphasizes strengthening the basic skills. The following courses are individualized to meet the needs of each student: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health & PE, and Career Technology Education. Academic remediation is available for students in the areas of Math and Reading. Student- to- teacher ratio is no more than 10:1. In addition to teaching staff, Mt. Vernon has a full-time principal, counselor, psychologist, social worker, and two office support staff. A daily point sheet is used to provide feedback to students and parents. A contingency management system is designed to allow students various privileges and rewards based on weekly average ratings on the point system.

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR RETURNING STUDENTS

Once accepted, students are admitted to Mt. Vernon for the remainder of that school year. At that time Mt. Vernon staff meets with base school representatives to discuss the student's progress and plan for the student's placement during the next school year. If students have been responsive to Mt. Vernon as an intervention, they are often allowed to return to our school if problems re-occur after returning to their base school.
